Merry Christmas Guys

Thought I'd share my Dad's design for the Smith family Christmas card this year. Gold lino print on card. This is actually the more festive version, most of them were printed on black.....

Ive also had a bit of free time recently so got into making a few decorations myself.

Here's wishing you all a 'satisfactory yuletide' and I'll see you in the new year

Artist in Residence

I'm thrilled to announce that I've been awarded a residency in Sri Lanka at the beginning of next year. I'll be out flying out to Colombo on the 15th of January until the 26th of February, giving me a solid 6 weeks to develop some new work. Here's a link to the Sura Medura Residency

Experimental film books

Just stumbled across these scans of early experimental film books courtesy of the Internet Archive; the Stan Brakhage issue of Film Culture which contains Brakhage's highly influential essay "Metaphors on Vision" is particularly difficult to track down for a reasonable price these days, so it's really wonderful to see it shared online here for free. You can even download them for your Kindle or e-reader if you've got one. Enjoy!

Foire D'Art//Art Fair

Some pictures of the affordable art fair at Gallerie Padi which opened on Friday and runs through to the 22nd. Unfortunately no one thought to take any photos at the private view but we had a good turnout and much mulled wine and mince pies...

And this is a little something I wrote for the catalogue...

It’s funny how life tends toward patterns. Five years on from starting the now defunct BadgerBadger Gallery in Carlisle, England I hardly expected to be so involved in a very similar enterprise here in Caubon. The parallels are strong, both galleries were founded with similar aims and as a response to a perceived void locally. This is the essence of DIY culture, trying to fill a gap yourself without necessarily waiting for funding or official support, build it and they will come, field of dreams style.

This attitude can be seen in many of the artists we are representing here; they are artists who, in the main, have yet to make a living from their work. All the same they are involved in various projects or are hard at work in their studios. Art needs to be received by an audience in order to truly function and that is where we come in, that is the gap we identified. Artist, Gallery and Audience, a triangle is the strongest structure.

Thanks again to everyone who contributed work

Marx Reloaded

Now this looks to be one bizarre film

Marxist philosphy, given a Matrix pastiche....yep. Includes appearances from notable philosophers as Jacques Ranciere, Slavoj Žižek and Michael Hardt.

From across the pond in Albany's State

A few exhibitions/installations have caught my eye across in New York State recently. One of which is scarily two years behind something similar recently posted on here in name and media used...

Takeshi Murata: Melter 2

Taking over the giant illuminating advertising billboard's of Time Square Takeshi Murata has created an immersive animation that appears for a few minutes just before midnight every evening over the month of November. Looks like quite a visually impacting -rather psychedelic- experience to happen upon.

The Whitney Museum is currently showings a retrospective of work by Wade Guyton. An artist who for the past 20 years has devoted his time exploring our changing relationships to images and artworks through the use of common digital technologies, such as the desktop computer, scanner, and inkjet printer. Along with exhibiting previous work he has created a new piece specifically made for the Whitney Museum.

And finally came across Circa 1971 today. An exhibition at the Dia in Beacon which celebrates EAI's (Electronic Arts Intermix)  40th anniversary, showcasing a series of diverse video works in EAI's collection that reveal the development of video work in art practices. It includes pieces by Vito Acconci, Eleanor Antin, Ant Farm, John Baldessari, Lynda Benglis, Shirley Clarke, Dan Graham, Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson, Joan Jonas, Gordon Matta-Clark, Nam June Paik, Raindance, Anthony Ramos, Carolee Schneemann, TVTV, Steina and Woody Vasulka, and others
