A rather odd post about BMW's

I've been looking out for some films with an intersecting narrative - particularly mainstream stuff and came across this. A rather inspired way to market BMW's - a collection of shorts each roughly 10minutes in length with many different directors and a range of actors featured. This is probably the best one - Clive Owen, James Brown, Danny Trejo and here's Gary Oldman as the devil.

Sarah Maple

After the talk and the mention of some work that can be seen as heavily referential I thought it might be of interest to post up a little info about Sarah Maple a young British Artist - she's in no way... definitely not... the new Tracy Emin... - who graduated a couple of years after/same time/couple of years before us. She was picked up by Saatchi and has a lot of the Saatchi model of artist about her with a cocksure confidence, wry sense of humour and strong personality that bleeds into her practice with work intended to provoke reaction. A lot of which leans on her Islamic background, western upbringing and feminism, with very strong nods towards Cindy Sherman, Gillian Wearing, Sarah Lucas and Barbara Kruger among others. I find her photographs of her posing with different phallic implements the most striking. Not because of the content she is pressing upon us but because of the locations and how they look. They could very easily be images someone has put up on their facebook/myspace/blog profiles of themselves, they have an everyday mundane quality and not to different to thousand upon thousands of digital images on the internet of young people. I find it quite fascinating how she places these within her practice and in so doing, the context of art.

Here's her website and here's an article on her on the Independent

***Swatch / Art Rules / Competition***

Swatch and the TTR World Snowboard Tour are pleased to announce the third annual Swatch Art Rules Design Contest. It offers artists the chance of a lifetime to have their artwork featured on the 2012/13 TTR World Tour Trophy and matching Swatch Tour Watch.

Swatch Art Rules is an excellent opportunity for an artist to showcase their work and break into the spotlight through the snowboard and art worlds. This year’s installment of the design contest presents a challenge to the artists of the world: submit a graphic design that expresses the themes of Progression and style. Progression and style are two elements that run through all aspects of snowboarding and an artist’s interpretation of these themes will make the TTR Trophy and Swatch Tour Watch aesthetically complete.

A jury evaluates the artworks and invites 3 nominees to the Swatch Art Rules Night where the final winning design will be unveiled.

Multiple entries are permitted per person. There is no entry fee.

Eligibility

This contest is open to anyone 18 years of age or older at the date of entry.

Minors, who are under the age of 18 years on the date of entry, are eligible to be selected as the winner only if the minor’s parent or legal guardian signs all forms required hereunder on behalf of such minor.

Prize

The top three nominees will be invited to the Swatch Art Rules Night gala event in May 2012 in the Los Angeles area (USA) where the winning design and artist are set to be unveiled to the world.

In addition to the portfolio-building exposure, the winner also receives a two-week trip to New York City (including travel costs, accommodation and pocket money for 2 people) to soak up all the art and design inspiration of the Big Apple.

WCS Record + Zine Fair

To coincide with the new opencallto submissions for Manifesto 8 I've just seen that Wolstenholme Creative Space are having a Record and Zine fair to show and sell independent zines from around the country and further a field. Might be neat to maybe get some made up (either of this new batch or of the faliure batch) and look to get them into this fair.

Manifesto #8 - Death of an Artisan!

The 8th issue of the occasional non-digital artist 'zine Manifesto is set to go into production and there is an open call for submissions for new works of art to appear in this edition.

Returning back to basics and the unmonumental ethos of the 'zine, this issue will explore the original concept of a do it yourself publication in which all entries have not been created digitally. Through an investigation of de-skilling or re-skilling we can create a way to move the discussion from Duchamp's avant-garde idea of the ready made in order to challenge the desire for value within culture, towards the realm of artistic and productive labour that displaces the identity of the artist. Manifesto #8 is dedicated to communicating ways in which ability and authorship can be challenged by showcasing povera works that differentiate from the general de-skilling of productive labour under capitalism. As a result of this investigation, all works are required to be cost effective and have a lower investment in human capital, there is no restriction on who can enter.

Requirements for work;
One piece of A5 Size paper, preferably black and white image or text, per contributor.
All work must be created without the use of the internet or computers, non digitised images and especially no binary codes. Any of a digital orientation will not be considered for entry.
Word Processing is prohibited, all written work should be hand written.

To coincide with the concept of de-skilling in productive labour, Manifesto #8 will be printed and published only through a photocopier, this is the only form of digitalisation allowed!

Deadline for Submissions - 1st of March 2012.

Artwork should be sent to,
Email Craig at callan693@gmail.com for enquiries and address for sending enteries.

Sos Eltis quote

Read this today and thought it was quite a bold and interesting statement.

The genius of the artist lies not in invention but in adaptation. The critic is therefore the supreme artist, superior to the original creator; the critic refashions the work of others using them as raw material for his own creative imagination.

The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosni

'The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosni' (2011) is a film by Rania Stephan which sets up a dialogue between the crossroads of Western and Arab cultures and influences by focusing on the career and mythology of Soad Hosni, a famous Egyptian actress of the 20th century who committed suicide in 2001. Appropriating VHS footage from over 80 films that Hosni starred in between 1959 and 1991 Stephan reveals a golden age of Egyptian cinema while also examining the legacy of the representations of modern Arab women. This has recently won Stephan the Art Prize at the Sharjah Biennial (2011) and has toured across the world from PS1 to the Serpentine. It looks like quite a haunting and beautiful film that has added depth through the the scratched and gnarled audio and visual qualities of VHS footage. This is a film that I would quite like to watch!
