Sarah Maple

After the talk and the mention of some work that can be seen as heavily referential I thought it might be of interest to post up a little info about Sarah Maple a young British Artist - she's in no way... definitely not... the new Tracy Emin... - who graduated a couple of years after/same time/couple of years before us. She was picked up by Saatchi and has a lot of the Saatchi model of artist about her with a cocksure confidence, wry sense of humour and strong personality that bleeds into her practice with work intended to provoke reaction. A lot of which leans on her Islamic background, western upbringing and feminism, with very strong nods towards Cindy Sherman, Gillian Wearing, Sarah Lucas and Barbara Kruger among others. I find her photographs of her posing with different phallic implements the most striking. Not because of the content she is pressing upon us but because of the locations and how they look. They could very easily be images someone has put up on their facebook/myspace/blog profiles of themselves, they have an everyday mundane quality and not to different to thousand upon thousands of digital images on the internet of young people. I find it quite fascinating how she places these within her practice and in so doing, the context of art.
