Side by Side

After watching this trailer , I'm extremely excited to watch this film, produced and narrated by non other than Keanu Reeves(?!). What looks like an encompassing debate between old and new film makers alike, Side by Side looks to offer a comparative arguement of the digital medium and how cinema is evolving.
Has anyone else heard of this film? I'd love to find a UK release date.

  1. Nathan,

I don't know if you've gotten to see this yet, but I caught a screening at a festival in Dallas, and it's absolutely worth watching. Reeves does a shockingly good job as interviewer/documentarian, and while it has an excellent and/or thorough lineup of directors (Scorsese, Lynch, Wachowski's, Christopher Nolan, George Lucas, etc.), the inclusion of most of their respective DP's, post-production folk (editors, colour correctors), and camera/tech companies (Red, Arri, Sony, Canon) make this stand out. It doesn't really take a stance in the Cellulose v Digital debate and makes sound arguments for and against each.

Oddly, I was writing the text for Sam when I saw this, and it touched upon an aspect of the speed of technological advances in the medium which was a wider concern I alluded to: that films have been made since the 80's in obscure and obsolete formats that can no longer be read or accessed. One filmmaker talks about work he made which is lost, albeit safely in storage.

But definitely see it if you can. If you know of a venue which would show something like this for a night, you could always get in touch with the distributors to see about arranging a screening if a decent audience could be drummed up.

    Cheers,
    Adam (Tex)
