The Future of the Zine...

So I've been talking to Craig, John & Geoff about the zine over the last few days..

Craig was really keen to get started on the next issue asap and suggested that each member of the collective took a turn at guest editing. John has already volunteered to get started on the next one.

So I've been thinking and come with a structure for how we'll do this and Geoff agrees with me;

  • Each member to guest edit an issue
  • Guest editor responsible for submissions, compiling & either producing the cover or inviting someone to design it (logo remaining the same)
  • I will continue (at least for the time being) to write the editorial page
  • Geoff and me to be 'editors at large' from now on
  • Format to remain A5, B&W, Photocopied, Non Digital
  • To continue to try and involve artists from outside the collective, use your own contacts!
  • Possibility of including a DVD/CD with short films at some point?
  • Photocopying will have to remain ad hoc (unless John gets the job!)
Any thoughts?

Who wants to go after John, probably April/May time?

Sam

  1. ME! if no one objects..

I have a contact who's done a bit of printing & photocopying for me for free, so that should be dandy. Might even be able to get it true bound it we did a larger issue with a limited run.

On that note I would like to question the requirement of non-digital format/production: if we were to include a dvd/cd, would that not compromise the premise?

There will be some things will be in the post for you, John, very shortly. Sorry for the delay

  2. Sounds good!

I know what you mean about the digital question, I thought about it and came to the conclusion that it doesn't matter if the DVD is included with the zine rather than digital becoming an integral part if that makes sense?

After all, we can hardly include a VHS with it can we, the post alone would cripple us!

I'm totally open to opinions on this, if everyone else thinks it's inappropriate to include a DVD then speak up.

I do feel it would harm the aesthetic of zine if we went digital for the artwork tho

  3. I'm very happy for Mike to do it next and could I take up the reigns after?

I agree with Mike on the non-digital requirement. I thought that was only a Manifesto requirement rather than a Black Swan Collective zine one? Or is BSC (not to be mistaken for BCE) still under the umbrella of Manifesto? The Image that is above all our names and was in the the first BSC zine looks decidedly digital to me?

Would there be a way of getting the new zine and the old one onto this blog in anyway other than a link? Sam made all the previous zine's avaliable to view on his site which is really awesome and would be a cool way of being able to view them still after the printed copies have all be distributed. Plus I just really want to see it now!

  4. I had this idea a while ago - VHS-wise, how about including just a rewound video reel from inside a cassette, with included instructions for how to assemble it inside another cassette? For packaging you could put it in a cheap cardboard box that would accommodate a reel (somewhere in size between 10cm x 10cm x 5cm, or 4" x 4" x 2") - or failing that, just use bubblewrap or a plastic seal bag. It should in theory cut down about half or two thirds the weight (and er, size) to post it. If people want to keep the reel alone as an objet d'art, you could include a 8cm DVD along with it too... hmm, I'm gonna try out a prototype of this real soon.

  5. Also, I got this book out of the local library today:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/100-Artists-Manifestos-Futurists-Stuckists/dp/0141191791

I might make some artistic amendments to it before I return it...

  6. John that sounds so cool! My mum has a DVD cum VHS player still, if you need a willing guinea pig to test it out you know my address :)

Ah, so if I had been paying a bit more attention I would have noticed that question about getting the zine onto the blog had already been asked and answered in a previous comments section... Adding a page to this blog for the collective zine would be really cool. Can we look to get this done?

Sam if you feel that presenting work digtally made would harm the aeshtetic of the zine I'm cool with it being a non-digital feature. I was just wanting some clarification on the digital input because I was a little confused by some of the pieces that had featured in the first Black Swan Zine which seem to contradict that aspect.
